5 things to do in Freiburg on a 1-day trip

Freiburg is a typical town for the southern part of Germany. The mild climate of the sunniest german city  enables a pleasant visit even in late Autumn.

1. Visit the main touristic spot and most important landmark of Freiburg - the Minster

The Freiburg Minster is built mostly in a Gothic style, so put your sun glasses on and take a nice look up at the high towers, count the sculptures or go in an enjoy the magnificent color play of the sunlight shining through the glass panels. However, a visit to the Freiburg Minster is not complete without strolling around the market on the Minster Square and eating the famous Lange Rote - a long sausage served in a bun with onions.

2. Explore the hidden beauty of the cute alleys

Most streets in the city centre are a car-free zone. Forget about your map for sometime and take your time to walk down narrow alleys covered with paving stones, jump over canals at the roadside and marvel at the various buildings - you can see Fachwerk houses, painted facades and sculptures in different styles. If you are aiming for a romantic experience, you should walk down Konviktstrasse and maybe get some hot chocolate or tea in Café Domino.

3. Enjoy the local cuisine

Freiburg has lots of restaurants and it may be hard to pick just one. It is advisable to try one of the hearty meals in a rustic ambience. The famous Kartoffelhaus offers numerous potato dishes - it is delicious, the staff is friendly, it is located not too far from the centre and if the weather allows it you may take place in the garden. Freiburg is located in a vineyards area, so don't forget to taste some of the local wines too.

4. Go hiking
Placed between the Black forest and the Rhein valley Freiburg offers lots of hiking opportunities with stunning views over the city. A 30 minutes walk starting from Münsterplatz can lead you to the Schlossberg - a hill on the east side of the city. If you have more time, take one of the paths into the woods and sink into the calmness of nature.

5. Take a walk along the river

Compared to other rivers flowing through big cities, the Dreisam is quite small - it is shallow and turbulent. Nevertheless, it is one of the  main arteries of Freiburg - take a walk on the promenade and enjoy the sounds around you - the wild water rustling, the people around you - chilling, jogging, biking.. Take your time to sit in the sun on one of the many benches or challenge yourself while trying to hop on the swing hanging from one of the bridges.

And last but not least, have fun and get in touch with the people and the culture, because that is all what travelling is about :)
